The Call to Prayer ministry was first created when Lt. Colonels Mervyn and Shirley Morelock were appointed as Territorial Evangelists. They had never seen themselves as evangelists and felt that God had not given them many of the obvious gifts of evangelism that are frequently seen in other evangelists. They knew that if they depended on their own gifts they would fail in this most significant assignment. But they believed that with God's anointing, and by many praying for them every day, they could be a blessing and many could be won for Jesus Christ.
The first person they enlisted was a sort of "God Thing." They hosted General Eva Burrows at a National Convention and told her their unease at the assignment they had been given. Her response was, "Oh, I'll pray for you every day!" And before the Morelocks retired from active service they had enlisted over 150 Prayer Partners who did pray for them daily. They became gratefully aware of the power of prayer, and God blessed in every campaign until they retired.
But just before retirement, Commissioner David Edwards, one of the early prayer partners, asked if they would continue the ministry and expand Call to Prayer ministry for the territory after retirement.
Every week since that time they gathered prayer needs and praise reports from many sources and sent them to the nearly 3,500 prayer partners, who signed covenants to pray and those who had received the Call to Prayer partner pin (praying hands on a Salvation Army flag background).
The ministry has grown from a few hundred prayer letters to a toll-free telephone service, where callers can hear the list that has been sent and record their own prayer need or praise report. Nearly 50 callers each month use this service (1-877-347-PRAY). Calls are received from all over the USA.
There are 12 Prayer Coordinators -- one in each Division, CFOT, THQ and the ARC Command who forward the weekly prayer request lists to each of their Units. It is estimated that 320 congregations receive the weekly Call to Prayer list.
Every Thursday or Friday, this Web site will have been updated, which will enable partners to see the current Call to Prayer request list. Site guests can also log in their prayer needs, which will be recorded in the next prepared list. The lists are approximately 650 words and are posted weekly. Guests may also add personal needs and/or praise reports. This list is changed weekle, and it is understood that full names are never used without permission.
You may wish to sign up to be a Prayer Partner by sending a request on the "Contact" page of this Web site. All materials will be sent postage paid.
